A garage door that suddenly feels too heavy, stops partway, or opens with a loud bang usually has more going on than a minor adjustment. Garage door spring replacement is one of those repairs where the visible problem is simple, but the work behind a reliable repair is not. The springs carry nearly all of the door’s weight. When one breaks or loses tension, the opener is left trying to do a job it was never designed to handle.

Extension systems are often found on lighter doors or older installations. They should have properly installed safety cables running through the springs, because a broken extension spring can move violently.
Spring sizing is based on more than door width and height. The actual weight of the door, drum size, cable lift, shaft configuration, track radius, and desired cycle life all affect the correct selection. A replacement spring that looks close can still be wrong. An undersized spring leaves the door heavy and hard on the opener. An oversized spring can cause the door to rise too quickly, resist closing, or lift off the floor.
This is particularly relevant with older homes in Santa Monica, Venice, Mar Vista, and West Los Angeles, where original garage doors may have been repaired in stages. One replacement panel, added insulation, decorative hardware, or wood repairs can change the door’s weight enough to affect spring performance.
Should Both Springs Be Replaced?
If a door uses two torsion springs and one has broken, I generally recommend replacing both when they are the same age and type. They have carried the same workload, so the remaining spring is often near the end of its useful life. Replacing the pair also gives the door balanced lifting force from side to side.
There are exceptions. If one spring was replaced recently and the other is clearly different in age or specification, replacing only the failed spring may make sense. The decision should be based on the condition and setup of the actual door, not a blanket rule.
What a Proper Spring Repair Includes
A good repair begins by identifying the reason the system failed and confirming what the door needs now. I look at the door’s condition before selecting the replacement components. A spring can break from normal fatigue, but it can also be shortened by a door that binds, runs crooked, or has worn moving parts.
The repair itself requires securing the door, safely releasing the failed spring system, installing correctly matched components, and setting tension so the door is properly balanced. This is not a repair for improvised tools or trial-and-error adjustments. The stored force in garage door springs can cause serious injury or property damage when handled incorrectly.
After the spring work, the rest of the system needs attention. I check the lift cables, drums, center bearing, end bearings, rollers, hinges, track alignment, bottom fixtures, and opener function. I also check the door’s manual balance. With the opener disconnected, a properly balanced door should move with controlled effort and remain reasonably stable at different points in its travel.
The final details matter. A loose cable, dry bearing, cracked hinge, or worn roller can make a newly repaired door noisy and uneven. If the opener travel limits or force settings have been pushed out of adjustment to compensate for a failing spring, those settings may need to be corrected after the door is balanced.
Repair, Adjustment, or a Larger Door Problem?
Not every garage door service call ends with spring replacement. Sometimes the springs are intact but the door is dragging because the tracks are out of alignment. Sometimes a wood bottom section has absorbed moisture and begun to deteriorate near the floor. In other cases, termite damage has weakened the jamb or framing that supports the spring hardware.
This is where a preservation-minded repair approach helps. A sound older door does not need replacement simply because it needs springs, rollers, weather seals, or hardware adjustments. Many original wood doors can be kept in service for years with careful repairs and proper maintenance. On the other hand, if the door sections are splitting, the hinges are tearing out, or the framing no longer holds the hardware securely, spring replacement alone will not solve the larger problem.

Repairing damaged wood, tightening hardware, improving the bottom seal, and correcting clearance problems can protect the work and improve daily operation.
A Few Practical Habits That Extend Spring Life
Springs eventually wear out, but a door that moves freely usually gets more useful life from them than one that fights its way through the tracks. Keep the tracks clear, do not rely on the opener to force a sticking door, and pay attention when operation becomes louder or less even.
Avoid spraying heavy grease on tracks. Tracks need to stay clean so rollers can travel properly. Moving pivot points, bearings, and rollers may need appropriate lubrication, but the right product and amount depend on the component. Excess lubricant collects dust and grit, which can create its own problems.
If the door has been hit by a car, catches on the floor, or begins lifting unevenly, stop using the opener until the cause is checked. A small alignment issue is less expensive to correct before it becomes a broken cable, damaged panel, or failed opener.
A garage door is the largest moving object in many homes, and it gets used with little thought until it stops working. When it begins showing signs of strain, addressing the balance and hardware early is a practical way to protect the door you already have and keep the garage safe to use.
