The paint was still mostly intact, but the lower corner of an exterior window trim had gone soft enough to dent under a screwdriver. That is a common termite repair example in older Westside homes: the visible damage looks small, while the real decision is hidden behind the trim. Is the framing sound? Did moisture create the condition that attracted termites or allowed decay to continue? Can the original detail be saved without turning a focused repair into unnecessary replacement?
On this particular type of job, I do not start by covering the damage with filler and paint. Filler has its place for shallow surface defects, but it cannot replace wood that no longer has structural strength. The repair has to begin with a careful opening, followed by an honest look at what is still worth keeping.
A termite repair example starts with finding the edges
Termites do not always leave a neat, obvious boundary. They may hollow out part of a trim board while leaving a painted outer skin that appears solid from the sidewalk. Water damage can look similar, and the two conditions often occur together around windows, doors, fascia, and exposed exterior moldings.
I start by probing the area, checking for soft spots, blistered paint, loose trim, mud tubes, and gaps at joints where water can enter. I compare thickness, reveal, slope, and shadow line before cutting replacement stock. Even a close-looking board can appear wrong when it sits proud of the original trim or leaves an uneven reveal around the window. Older houses tend to expose small inconsistencies because their materials have more character and detail than a basic flat-board installation.
In some cases, I can preserve most of an original board and splice in a new section with a long, well-supported joint. In other cases, a full-length replacement makes a cleaner and more durable repair. It depends on where the damage falls, how much of the existing board remains sound, and whether the profile can be blended convincingly.
Rebuilding for water, not just appearance
The replacement wood has to fit correctly, but fit alone is not enough. Exterior wood fails first at end grain, horizontal surfaces, open seams, and locations where water is trapped against the wall.
For a window repair, I make sure the sill slopes outward so water drains away rather than sitting against the window. I prime cut ends and concealed surfaces where practical, especially where they will be harder to protect later. Fasteners need to hold the work securely without splitting the wood or leaving oversized holes that invite water.
The joints are then sealed with the right material for the location. Exterior-grade sealant should remain flexible as wood moves through heat, cooler marine air, and seasonal moisture changes. A rigid or poorly bonded bead may look fine on the day of the repair, then separate at the first movement cycle. Caulk is not a substitute for proper carpentry, but properly fitted carpentry still needs caulk at vulnerable transitions.
There is also a limit to how tightly everything should be sealed. Some assemblies need a path for incidental moisture to drain or dry. Sealing a visible gap without understanding where water is supposed to go can trap moisture behind the repair. That is why I look at the whole window or door opening, not just the damaged corner.
Preparing the repair for a finish that lasts
Paint is the final protective layer, not a way to hide incomplete work. Before painting, I fill only where filling is appropriate, sand transitions smooth, spot-prime bare wood, and check that the replacement piece reads as part of the original assembly.
This is where many quick termite repairs become obvious. Thick filler lines, mismatched trim thickness, unprimed end cuts, and caulk smeared across the face of molding may disappear temporarily under fresh paint. Within a season or two, they often telegraph through, crack, or collect dirt.
A good finish also requires attention to the surrounding surface. If peeling paint extends beyond the repair, the loose edges need to be feathered back. If the repair is next to stucco, the stucco-to-trim joint needs a clean, compatible seal. If a window is loose or its glazing is failing, that should be addressed before declaring the woodwork finished.
When a localized repair is the right choice
A focused repair is usually worthwhile when termite damage is contained, the adjacent wood is solid, the original component has value, and the moisture source can be corrected. This is often the case with a section of exterior casing, a porch detail, a door jamb corner, or a small fascia area.
Replacement becomes more sensible when damage has spread through several structural members, the window or door unit itself has failed beyond practical repair, or repeated water intrusion has affected a broad section of wall. Preserving old material is worthwhile, but preservation should not mean keeping wood that has lost its ability to do its job.
For homeowners, the useful question is not simply, “Can this be patched?” It is, “What will this area look and perform like after a few wet winters and several hot summers?” The answer depends on sound substrate, correct material selection, drainage, sealing, and finish preparation working together.
What to look for before damage gets larger
Check exterior trim near the bottom corners of windows and doors, where splashback and failed caulk often cause trouble first. Press gently around painted wood that looks bubbled or uneven. Look for separating joints, dark staining, soft sill edges, and paint that repeatedly peels in the same place.
Do not assume every soft spot is active termite damage, and do not assume termite treatment restores damaged lumber.
